Homemade Bath and Spa Product Safety

Now that you have decided to make your own bath and spa products at home there are some safety concerns you should be aware of. First make sure you keep your work area clean and organized. Solutions should be properly labeled to eliminate any confusion and, remember to keep your ingredients out of the reach of unsupervised children. There are safe and creative products you can make with your children but they should always be supervised.

Splashes, spills and, dust particles are a concern. I suggest that you have and, use safety goggles at all times. Rubber gloves should also be used when handling certain ingredients. In addition to proper handling you should familiarize yourself with all of the ingredients you are using.

Essential oils and fragrances are wonderful when used correctly but can also be very toxic if misused. Some may not be safe for bath and body products. It is important to make sure you are using the correct oils, in the correct amounts for your products. Some oils may smell lovely and be great for potpourri but are consider skin irritants never to be used in bath and body products. Some oils may be okay to ingest making them great for lip balms but others could be very toxic if ingested. Wintergreen oil has a wonderful aroma but should never be ingested. Other oils such as Angelica Root and Birch are considered to be skin irritants.

I suggest keeping your oils organized in away that you don't accidentally use a safe potpourri oil in a bath or beauty product. I can't tell you the importance of understanding the oils and fragrances you decide to use, it is well worth the research.

As you can see there is a lot to learn about essential oils and the other ingredients before you go mixing anything together. Making bath and body products can be fun and rewarding if done in a safe and well educated setting.

Having a good understanding of essential oils will give you an excellent foundation for creating all types of spa, beauty and, aromatherapy products. You can find an essential oil index with information on the effects and uses of common oils as well as spa and beauty recipes at the Nature's Healing Essentials Website.
